Spidend adult

Spidend larva Feltiella acarisuga is a tiny gall-midge that feeds on two-spotted spider mites and various other species of spider mites. Feltiella are used when spider mite infestations are severe; they may be used with appropriate mite predators for the most effective control. They are most often used in tomatoes, cucumbers, sweet peppers, other greenhouse crops and field strawberry crops. Feltiella works best for plants which have hairy stems. Of particular interest to greenhouse growers is that they have been shown to work quite effectively in situations where other mite predators have been ineffective by themselves.

Storage and handling

  • storage after receipt: 1-2 days
  • storage temperature: 8-10°C/47-50°F
  • in the dark

Remarks: Feltiella acarisuga should always be used in combination with the predatory mite Phytoseiulus persimilis.

  • Adults: midge of 2 mm long, pink-brown, long legs
  • Eggs: oblong, 0.1 x 0.25 mm in size, shiny, translucent
  • Larvae: 0.2-2 mm in size, orange-brown, occur in spider mite colonies
  • Pupae: are inside a white coccoon, occur mainly at the undersides of leaves, along the veins

Mode of action:  Adult gall-midges search for spider mite colonies actively and deposit eggs next to the spider mites. The larvae that hatch feed on spider mite eggs and suck them empty. It takes one week for the eggs to develop to mature larvae. The pupal stage takes approximately one week.

Visual effect: Spider mites that are killed by the gall-midge shrivel up and become brown or black. Dozens of larvae can be found per spider mite infested leaf. White cocoons are clearly visible along the veins of the leaf.
