Aphidus spp

Parasitic wasp Aphidius (spp.) target Aphids:

Aphidius colemani and Aphidius ervi are all natural aphid parasites and very useful and effective for the prevention and low-infestation management of various aphid species. These 2-3 millimeter mini-wasps are best used for preventing the establishment of aphids.  They can also tackle light to medium infestations. And, if established, they can adequately protect a crop throughout the season.

Aphidius colemani, which are normally shipped as ready-to-emerge mummies (expect to see some hatched adults on arrival), seem to be the product of choice when the cotton aphid (Aphis gossypii), tobacco aphid  (Myzus persicaevar. nicotianae), the peach potato aphid  (Myzus persicae),  and the bird cherry-oat aphid (Rhopalosiphum padi) commonly used on banker plants.

Aphidius ervi, is shipped as mummies (expect to see some hatched adults on arrival), and is an excellent parasite of potato aphid (Macrosiphum euphorbiae), foxglove aphid (Aulacorthum solani) and the pea aphid (Acyrthosiphon pisum). A strong flier, it can locate small aphid colonies, making it excellent for preventive applications. Capable of parasitizing hundreds of aphids, it can be used for curative applications, but should be used in conjunction with aphid predators such as lacewings.

Aphidius (spp.) are amazing parasitic wasp that stings its aphid victim and lays its egg directly inside the aphid. In a couple of days, the aphid will die, begin to swell up, and as it swells take on a leathery appearance. Inside this leathery aphid mummy a new parasitic wasp is developing and will soon emerge. Once the new parasitic wasp emerges and it is able to fly, it will sting more aphids, lay more eggs, and continue the cycle. To apply Aphidius, just open the bottle and divide the material into seperate piles or use distribution boxes; be sure to keep the piles dry and away from ants. For smaller contained areas Aphidius should be applied at a minimum of one pupa per two square feet.
